Dear friends,

The International Dance Symposium is a thematic symposium which I had the pleasure to initiate in 2011 within the framework of the Cyprus Centre of the ITI. After being evaluated by the Board of the International Dance Committee in 2014, it was adopted as a long term project to be enriched, developed and co-organized by the members of IDC, affiliated organizations and interested National Centres of the ITI.

The next  International Dance Symposium will take place in Manaus, Brazil during the 35^th Congress of the ITI, in May the 30^th to June the 4^th 2016. (Dates to be finalized in January)

The ITI and the Brazilian Centre of the ITI and the Municipality of Manaus have now kindly offered to host the 5^th International Dance Symposium “Dancing in the Body of Nature”, which includes the provision of a stage and the hosting of selected artists/lecturers. 

Against this background the IDC is making an open call for participation with performances, lectures and workshops (see attachment).

Accordingly, you are welcome to participate as a National Centre of the ITI, as an individual artist, academic or functionary in the field of dance, as a  dance organization or as a member of the IDC.

If you are not already a member, you are welcome to join the IDC by sending us a letter of interest and your cv. Being a member of IDC will entitle you to propose candidates for the International Dance Day message author, vote and propose future projects of interest to the dance community, at an international level.

            5^th International Dance Symposium
                        to be held during the 35^th ITI World Congress in Manaus / Amazonas / Brazil

30 May to 4 June 2016

 

Open Call for Dance Performances, Lectures and Workshops

The International Dance Committee IDC, in collaboration with the International Theatre Institute ITI, the Brazilian Centre of the ITI and the Municipality of Manaus, is organizing the 5^th International Dance Symposium. It is to be held during the 35^th ITI World Congress in Manaus / Amazonas / Brazil, which will take place from 30 May to 4 June 2016.

The Theme of the Symposium is "Dancing in the Body of Nature”

The purpose is to highlight the relation of Man to Nature by addressing the following issues:

 “How do humans connect and become part of Nature through dance? How does the Western civilization alienate humans from Nature through the notion of duality expressed in “Man and Nature” or “Body versus Spirit”? How does Nature and Body becomes objects?  How do various traditions, philosophies, religious practices and neuroscience bridge this gap? How does the dancer experience his/her relationship to “Nature” through the act of dancing?” 

The International Dance Committee IDC accepts applications for:

1.    Contemporary dance performances, adapting to a stage of 8 meter x 8 meter with a duration of  approximately 10 to 20 minutes.

2.    Lectures on the topic of “Dancing in the Body of Nature”, with a duration of max. 10 to 15min.

3.    Workshops on various dance styles and practices, from 1 to 2 days. Please specify if it is for professional dancers or amateurs/beginners.

Deadline for the applications:  30 January 2016

The Municipality of Manaus will provide a fully equipped stage for dance performances. It is hosting (bed and breakfast) selected participants for 5 days during the Congress (not before and after).

The selected artists can ask for an invitation letter from the Municipality of Manaus and ITI worldwide by which they can apply for travel expenses and honorarium or per diem to ministries, foundations and other organizations. Unfortunately, the IDC, the ITI worldwide, the Brazilian Centre and the Municipality of Manaus are not able to cover travel expenses, honorariums and per diems for performances, lectures and workshops but only the stay in Manaus.
